I spent a lovely time in London with friends last weekend full of chat and fun. At some point, the conversation came to my friend's long and narrow living-room. She was saying how challenging it is to furbish the space and asked for ideas. I was more than happy to share a few quick tips, but the question has been stuck with me since so I decided to give it a second thought and share it with you. Who knows, maybe some of you face the same struggle.
To make the long room more cozy, I would divide it into defined areas. Usually, it will be a seating zone for watching TV and another zone that will encourage conversations. This area would be perfect to play games with the family as well.
To best way to create different zones is using area rugs (they don't have to be identical) and art pieces that fit each zone.
Floating your furniture in the room will not cut off the room but make it cozier and more intimate. Use "natural" ways to "break" the room by having the sofa or a desk (or both) in the middle of the room. Keep away from tall furniture though as you don't want any visual obstruction.
Add volume and height to the room with shelves, drapes or art.
A narrow room will feel more elegant and calm with soothing colours and symetri. Add a splash of colour with accessories that will be easy to update and change according to the mood or the season:
