DIY stenciled floor

3/25/2014

When we moved in our house, all the flooring was covered with laminate planks. We didn't love it but it was brand new  and we decided to keep it. Now, 10 years later, we'd like to change it. We still consider several flooring options but the truth is that we fear the amount of work, mess and planification it implicates.
However we improved the stairs which are leading to the basement. We covered each step with stained hard pine. I love the result but unfortunately the colour contrast between the stairs and the landing is eyesore.
I made some research on pinterest and got smitten with stenciled floors.
Here are some gorgeous inspiration images:

Totally excited by the project, I first made a stencil.
The process is easy as long as you go for a simple pattern (I first tried a more intricate design and had to give up at the cutting stage!).

Here is how I proceed:
1- put a laminating pouch through the laminating machine
2- relaminate the laminated pouch, so that you get a thicker stencil
3- print a pattern and draw it on the stencil

4- cut your pattern with an Exacto knife. (I was too quick and forgot to take pictures of this step.)
5- I used  floor painting and a small foam roll. I had to wipe the first two painted octagons as I was too generous with the paint, so make sure not to overload your roll!

You will notice that I had to tape the central part of the octagon to be able to get the pattern right. It gave me this little gap on the octagonal shape but I actually like it better this way.

I like how the stairs look tied together with the landing.

DIY: Customize a pillow cover in no time

I was browsing at H&M Home a couple of weeks ago when this little guy stopped me.

I have this love affair with cockatoos. They are good looking and always add a touch of exotism in your life (as long as they don't use their vocal cords).
I took it home but he felt lonely. I couldn't find a fitting mate for him. Two cockatoos would have been over the top, especially because they would have looked weirdly at my new gallery wall.
I couldn't match it with another animal either: too afraid to have the impression of living in a zoo.
So I decided to make my own matching pillow without being to matchy-matchy.
I bought a cheap plain pillow cover at H&M Home, grabbed a sheet of transfer paper I had on hand, lifted my eyes to the ceiling and waited for inspiration. The best I came with was the word "cockatoo", I printed these amazing eight letters in coral:

Don't forget to select the option T-shirt transfer on your printer.
Then, I followed the instructions to transfer the print to the pillow cover.
Here you've got it: an easy quickly made, matchy pillow to the cockie.

ooops, I forgot to hide the cables...

What about you? Which is the easiest trick you have tried in your home decor? I'd like to know.

Old stone farmhouse in France

As much as I love modern design and architecture, I am always a sucker for a weekend in a romantic place on the countryside. I just love to take a walk in a typical French hamlet.
We are currently in the peak season of awards in France. Awards are given away for movies, music, food and architecture. The "Most popular house in France" ("La maison préférée des Français") has been awarded for the third year:
Here, twenty-two houses from different regions were on competition.
The winner was a beautiful authentic stone farmhouse in Aveyron, a region full of history, picturesque villages, and famous for its gastronomy, vineyards and craft .

The charming farmhouse, named Le Pigeonnier (The Pigeonhole) had been totally renovated and re-opened as a guest house (Chambre d'hôte , Table d'hôte).

Imagine to take your breakfast on this terrace. Sigh.
I will definetely re-visit this part of France.
